General Assembly: The Diaoyutai Islands dispute
General Assembly- Special Political and Decolonization Committee
The Diaoyutai Islands is controversial regarding its sovereignty. Furthermore its territory is close to key shipping lanes, rich fishing grounds, and there may be oil reserves in the area.
Due to the complicated historical background and the huge profits held by the sovereignty of the islands, the surrounding countries, including China, Japan, Republic of China, all claim the islands.
In September 2012, the Japanese government purchased the islands, prompting large-scaled protests in China, which deteriorated the relationship between the two countries. The protests also inflicted heavy losses on Japan’s economy since Japan and China had intensive economical interaction with each other. On September 25th, Taiwanese fishing ships, protected by the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration, also setting out to the Diaoyutai Islands to assert its claims to the islands.
Can the Diaoyutai Islands dispute be solved by means of peace? How can we cool down the situation in East Asia which has been unusually turbulent this year? Is there any possibility that the three countries share the resources and develop the Islands jointly? And how? If not, what actions should be taken to regulate the behaviors of the three countries?
